Weight Loss Clinic

Recent Government Surveys show that nearly 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 10 children are obese. And things are getting worse and worse.

Obesity is defined as having too much body fat. Body fat can be estimated using the Body Mass Index or BMI. You can calculate your own BMI very easily, if you know your weight and height. A normal BMI is one that is around 20-25. If your BMI is between 25 and 29.9 then you are overweight. You are obese if you have a BMI of 30 or more.

The higher your BMI, the greater the chance of developing health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease and strokes.

Please note that the BMI on its own cannot be used for anyone under 18 years. If you are under 18 years and worried about your weight, or you are worried about your child’s weight, either speak to your school nurse or health visitor, or make an appointment with one of our nurses for more advice.

Very Low Calorie Diets

Very low calorie diets are acknowledged by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) as being suitable for some patients, though the guidelines are very strict.

From time to time we receive requests to provide medical supervision or recommendations for patients considering undertaking a very low calorie diet with a commercial organisation. Whilst we are sure that many of these companies do act in the best interests of their customers, we cannot provide such supervision in the practice.

The only exception would be for patients who are undertaking very low calorie diets under the supervision of a specialist within an NHS hospital.
